Hotels in Samoa

Samoa offers a clear choice between an Apia base and time by the beach, including stays in traditional fales. Upolu combines town services with coastal accommodation, while Savai‘i adds a ferry crossing and another island setting. Decide how you want to sleep, eat and move around before comparing the available places to stay.

Hotels at the pace of the islands

Apia lies on Upolu, where accommodation choices extend from town addresses to coastal stays. Lalomanu is a useful reference point on the southeastern shore. On Savai‘i, Salelologa provides the ferry arrival point. Treat an island change as a separate travel stage with its own nights, rather than judging it only by distance on a map.

The word fale deserves a closer look at the actual accommodation: open or enclosed sleeping space, beds, bathrooms and food arrangements. An enclosed hotel room provides a different experience. Compare the facilities your party needs and any transfer charges. Where restaurants are not nearby, the property’s meal arrangements become an especially useful selection criterion.

Ferries between Upolu and Savai‘i link Mulifanua with Salelologa, rather than leaving from central Apia. Include the drive to the wharf and the onward journey to your accommodation. If a rental car is part of the itinerary, confirm both the rental company’s conditions and the arrangements for taking a vehicle on the chosen crossing.

One detail worth knowing

For a fale booking, request a photograph of the actual accommodation and details of its bathroom arrangements.

When to plan your stay

May to October is generally drier; November to April is wetter. Rainfall differs between coastal areas and the islands’ interiors.

A little knowledge before you go.

Good to know

A few things
before you go.

A little clarity for choosing your room and planning the journey ahead.

Does a fale always mean an enclosed bungalow?

No. The name alone does not establish the layout. Ask whether the sleeping area is open or enclosed, what bedding is supplied and whether bathrooms are private or shared. Check meals as well. Those details allow a useful comparison with a hotel room based on the experience you actually want.

Does the Savai‘i ferry leave from Apia?

The main crossing to Savai‘i runs from Mulifanua on Upolu to Salelologa. An Apia stay therefore requires a road journey to the departure wharf. Check sailing times, transport to the port and pickup on arrival before assigning accommodation nights, especially when your plans include taking a rental vehicle across.

Should I stay in Apia or Lalomanu on Upolu?

Apia fits a programme focused on markets, restaurants and town visits. Lalomanu is more relevant for days spent beside the beach. Compare journeys to your priority activities and the comfort you want. Dividing a longer visit between the two can be useful when you have enough time to justify changing accommodation.
