Hotels in French Polynesia

French Polynesia rewards a little planning before you pick a room. Tahiti gives you an arrival base and city life, while Moorea brings mountains and a lagoon within reach of the capital by sea. Further islands add different landscapes but also extra journeys. Match your accommodation to those connections and the days you want ashore.

Hotels at the pace of the islands

The Society Islands include Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, with accommodation settings that change from one shoreline to the next. The Tuamotu atolls put lagoon activities at the centre of a visit. The Marquesas offer a different emphasis, with steep island landscapes and cultural outings that deserve their own time in an itinerary.

A room price alone tells you little about the overall trip. Add the meals, island transfers and outings you expect to use before comparing a guesthouse with a resort. For a property on a motu, ask how trips to the main island work. Self catering also depends on practical access to food shops.

Tahiti is the international arrival point, followed by ferries to Moorea or domestic flights for many onward journeys. Check the connection between each booking, including luggage arrangements and the final ride to your accommodation. Consider spending the last night on Tahiti when separate transport tickets leave little flexibility before your international departure home.

One detail worth knowing

For a motu stay, ask about both your arrival transfer and transport to the main island during the holiday.

When to plan your stay

In the Society Islands, May to October is generally less humid, while November to April is warmer and wetter. Conditions vary across the archipelagos.

A little knowledge before you go.

Good to know

A few things
before you go.

A little clarity for choosing your room and planning the journey ahead.

Should I stay on Tahiti before taking the ferry to Moorea?

Start with your arrival time and the sailing available on that date. Allow for getting from the airport to the port as well as boarding procedures. If the connection looks tight, a Tahiti stop can give you more flexibility. Pick that night’s accommodation around the point you will leave from the next morning.

What should I check when booking a Polynesian guesthouse?

Find out which room you are reserving, whether the bathroom is private and how meals and arrival transfers work. A guesthouse can fit a trip built around island exploration and conversations with hosts. The category itself does not define the facilities, so compare the actual inclusions and your preferred level of independence.

How does a motu bungalow compare with staying on the main island?

Think about how often you want to leave the property. On the main island, look at nearby food shops and restaurants. For a motu, investigate boat arrangements, dining choices and any additional charges. Compare the cost of your whole planned stay, since the nightly room rate leaves out these practical differences.
